How to Keep Rodents Out of Your Ductwork

Rodents and ductwork don’t mix. If rodents manage to get into your ductwork, they can cause structural damage and even spread bacteria and viruses through the house. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to keep rodents out of your ducts. These steps will protect your ducts and your health.

• Have Your Ducts Professionally Cleaned. When we clean ducts, we don’t just remove dirt and debris. We also look for holes in the ductwork. This is often how rodents get in. By identifying the holes before there is a problem, you can get them fixed and keep those nasty rodents out. As an added bonus, once your ducts are repaired, they will also work better.
• Secure Fine Wire Mesh Over Gaps. Gaps between the ductwork and the walls create an easy entry spot for rodents. Check for gaps all around your home and close them up with fine wire mesh. Then rodents won’t be able to get in anymore.
• Use Traps. Traps are also helpful in keeping rodents out of the ducts. You don’t have to go up into the ductwork to set the traps, either. Turn off the HVAC system, open up the vents, and place traps right inside them. Then replace the grates and turn the system back on. Check the traps daily and clean them out as necessary. Otherwise, the ducts will emit a foul smell.

Rodents are unsanitary and dangerous to duct systems. Use these tips so you don’t have to worry about hosting a family of mice in your ducts.
