Immediate Steps to take During Flooding

Even if you live in a dry area, you are not immune from the possibility of flooding. Flooding is not just a process that occurs out in nature, but can happen from a myriad of indoor causes, as well. Whether it’s a water heater that gives way, a toddler who turns on the water and overflows the sinks in the bathroom, or too much rain for your sump pump to handle, flooding can happen at any time and to anyone. If an area in your home is flooding, take the following steps immediately:

1. Safety First! Water is more dangerous than people realize. A few inches can knock an adult off balance, and it’s an excellent conductor of electricity. If you have the slightest hesitation about the safety of the water, do not risk your safety by venturing into it!
2. Stop the Source. In the case of a man-made flooding source, determine where the water is coming from and do what you can to stop the flow. Every homeowner should know where their home’s water shut-off valve is and how to operate it.
