Any time you notice a water leak in your home, you will want to take action as soon as possible before any serious damage occurs. By knowing what to do in this situation, you can minimize the impact of the water leak and it will be easier to stay calm.

Turn Off the Water

You should always know where the shut-off valve for the water in your home is. While you hopefully won’t need to use it, it can be necessary in the case of a water leak or during certain routine repairs and installation. The first step when you notice a leak is to turn off the water reaching that area. If the leak is on a toilet or other fixture, there may be a specific cutoff valve for that device. Using this will stop the water leak from getting worse, but still let you use water in other areas of your home. If the area in question doesn’t have a specific cutoff valve, then you will need to shut off the main water supply.

You can also contain the water by placing a bucket underneath the leak or a rag to soak up moisture that has already fallen. Be careful, however, so the bucket doesn’t overflow.
